Peacock Cichlid tank looks blah.... help!

okay creative people.. any advice you all have is welcome... I know that the natural habitat for the african guys is rocks, and sand w/ very little plants at all... but my peacock tank has a black background w/ salt/peper sand/crushed coral, and rocks.... its ugly! The lighting is a great light, its a compact florecent w/ an atenic bulb and a florecent in it... then we also have the moonlights...

I am thinking of getting some round stone form a landscaping place? and some of the plastic plants that go from the bottom of the tank to the top and float?? WE need color! anything to contrast the peacocks colors... they are beautiful fish but they are just not poping out like the mbunas.

My other option would be to get a brighter background, order some texas holey rock, and see how that looks....

any ideas

Petsmart has "Fancy Plants" which are very tall and will reach the top of your tank and then spread out a little at the top (see the post in my thread 70 Gallon African Tank or my profile album). Honestly, I find that plants do a lot for a tank. Part of the reason I re-did my oscar tank is that I hated the fact that it looked like a barren desert.

Thats what I was looking at yesterday at petsmart. I will prob get some of them. Btw I love your african cichlid setup! If it wasn't for the plants in the background of my african cichlid tank I would do the same in my african tank. The peacocks are just so boring looking, and I think they are even bored w/ their tank lol... I also plan to go by a landscaping place and get some bigger rocks/stones this next week since my rocks in my mbuna tank and peacock tanks are getting outgrown, they were find when they were tiny guys/girls but they need some bigger stones. (we are also going to have to get a 90+ tank) I think I might just put the peacocks in the 55g and turn the 36 into a lab tank I love the little labs!! I am going to breed them)

Thanks You should post up a complete pic of your tanks. I have only seen pics of your individual fish (they are great pics though). I think I could be more help if I could see what the tank looks like. A 90+ gallon tank.....I am jealous! Are you going to move your mbuna into that when you get it? Breading yellow labs sounds so fun! I wish I had the space to breed fish, but I don't at this point. I guess if any of my fish end up breeding on their own I'll find space (I usually can if I get creative)

Heres some of my bigger tanks. Thats my only pic of the 36g that isn't just fish. I don't have any of my breeder tank, small peacock, or the other mbuna fry tank. (I need to take pics of my smaller fish!)
Yea, we are going to put the mbuna in the bigger tank so they have more room. (of coarse we will prob end up putting a few more of the red zebras in there, and a couple more kenyi females in there to breed.

On the getting breeding tanks... I have took up my kitchen space lol.. However, there is a fishstore in the town where my husband works that is interested in buying african cichlid fry from me so if I can supply him w/ cichlids its going to be worth breeding. My only condition, hes getting educated on africans when I go over there. I am going to make sure that my fish don't get mishandled. Not to mention my husband stops in there a lot so I will find out. And as soon as he says something neg about the store, no more of my fry will go to him if I have to raise them myself and give them to friends and family for free.

Your tanks look great! I think that the best thing for your 36 gallon would be to add some tall fake plants. I felt the same way about my mbuna tank when I first set up my 70 gallon because the rocks only covered the bottom portion of the tank and the top levels were empty. A tall plant will fill in that empty space and add some color to the tank. That is great that you have found a fish store to take some of the fry off of your hands. Hopefully they will treat them well. Good idea using kitchen space for tanks! I wish I could, but since I am in an apartment I have the smallest kitchen known to man oh well

The next time I get to go to petsmart I am going to get their fake tall plants, they seem to have a good variety their... Thanks!
I just wish we didn't live in a double-wide I don't think the floors will support a tank as big as I really want (125+gallon) but we are even struggling w/ the decision for a 90 gallon...
I told my husband to call on of the guys where we bought our home, he was so educated in how the homes were made, and since we got one of the top made homes, the walls are as thick as a reg home.... I have to wonder if the floors are the same, if they are..... large tank away! he will have to ask though how much is our floors able to hold...

Thanks, Their stone would be way to pricey, I don't want to pay for shipping, etc. I am going to either go to a landscaping place or get it out of the lake myself and treat it. Not to mention the way I move the rocks around I don't want one set way to stack them, I am always redoing the tanks.
