In need of cichlid advise.

I have a question. I would like to add cichlid(s) to my tank. I recently had two gouramis but over time they became aggressive not only with each other but my other fish. With the gouramis gone I just have the tetra, platys, and cory. I have been thinking about maybe adding two cichlids, so I read up on them and read a couple of the threads and got pretty excited that I could actually maybe add keyhole or chocolate cichlids to my tank. But when I went to the pet store (Pet Smart and Petco) today both individuals thought I was crazy for wanting to add them to a community tanks. Are they right?

My 3 keyholes are in a 44g community with platys, diamond tetra 3 otos, and fancy plecos.
They've even bred with the other male in their tank amazingly enough not the aggression you see with kribs. They are so peaceful and I recommend them for any community tank that is 40g+ The males can get 5"+ so they need space.

Thanks Allie it was after seeing the pics of yours and reading that you had them in a community tank that got me excited about maybe being able to have cichlids.

A lot of cichlids do alright with other fish, not all are aggressive enough to need their own tank. www.cichlid-forum.com has a ton of cichlid profiles, including their aggressiveness with other fish and with other fish of their own species.

That's how I got mine. I saw pix of someone's keyholes and I was determined to get some too.
