Well, we're partial to Angels, but I'd suggest checking out profiles at http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/ to check aggression levels. If you can find these guys:

Cant really recommend as I just started a few months with ours but make sure to read about them first, especially their size. I was just reading today and the avg. is about 2-10" long. Obviously not something you want in a 30Gal. I currently have 1 Male Yellow Lab and 4 Red Fins, the Yellow Lab is very bright and neat to look at. I would recommend them .

Take a look at my pics I just posted on my mbunas and peacocks... my peacock tank is a 36 bow (we only have 5 peacocks maxing out at 7)... the mbunas we have 9 but will end up w/ 15 you can have about 10 in a 29-30 g tank you def want to overstock mbunas.... and overfilter the tank. The peacocks I am doing an all male tank.... they are VERY colorful!

Or you could get some german rams and gold rams w/ some angel fish (they are no where near as active as africans though)

I would go with dwarf mbuna, nothing that gets bigger than 5" at the most...most haps/peacocks get too big/aggressive to be in a 30g for life.
