the best advice I could give you is research research research, we have about 5 different books w/ cichlid info on them one book I recommend is the animal planets care of african cichlids (it offered a lot of great advice), and we research each specific cichlid that we buy, all of the books I have read say if any nitrites or ammoinia do water changes daily until it goes back down to -0-, any trace is dangerous to your fish and that is with any fish at all. Your ph should be alkiline (7.6-8.2), water temp at about 76-78, anything over 80 increases their metabolism and makes them hungry more often plus shortens their lifespan.

Are you taking the cichlids out of the tank when you move the rocks around? I find that something that maybe I only do but I am scared I might hit one of my little girls/guys and I would rather them not be in the tank.
Not to mention on the rock changing around..... both my kenyi and yellow lab got pouted up about 2 weeks ago after a big tank change around neither would eat they actually scared me. Then they finally found them a "territory" and after that were happy after about 2 days.

btw on the nitrogen cycle in the tank, fishlores homepage has that on there, I would def read up on the cycle and how it works. Until about 6 months ago I personally did not even know you had to test the water, cycle a tank, etc... then I started researching fish and came upon that.... the funny thing was that was when my husband was yelling about me starting up fish again and I said something to him about the nitrogen cycle.. (yea well he has a bachlors in enviromental science minor in chem) He knew all about it! Even had a limenology book that he dug out from college (study of water)... I got deeply into breeding my guppies, etc and then we decided after christmas together to get a big tank (after I had 3 tanks going in the house) Now we are both so hooked on the african cichlids that we are going to buy a 75 gallon set up to move our mbuna's in and put our smaller breeds of africans in the 55 and add to it.... (I CAN't WAIT!)
