Ever heard of this fish?

My dad kept freshwater fish ages ago, and always talks about his favorite, which he refers to as a "dovie-eye" (dough-vee)? i've looked for this fish, and never found anything that sounded similar... i think it's a cichlid of some sort, and that it was fairly aggressive. he said it tolerated only one other fish in the tank, a huge pleco (over a ft long).

anyway, i've always wondered what sort of fish this really was, so if you've heard of something similar, please let me know.

They are one of the three largest species of cichlid.
It is not uncommon for them to get a meter in length.

180g for 1 and they aren't community fish, that's for sure. They'd eat the community.
