Tank limits, but want fish with personality.

Hi all,

I just upgraded mine and my boyfriends tank. Now it looks like I'll need another one for my boyfriend pictus catfish. And would like a bigger or aggressive fish, as the pictus, whos 4-5 inchs, ate all his old tankmate (they were in the old tank for several months and in one day he ate all; 3 tertas and 2 gouramis). I would like a fish with a big personality like an oscar, but rooms an issue, so I need some help....

Would I able to get any other fish with him in a 20 gallon?? If not the space I have can fit about 35 inchs wide, 35 inchs long, and 38 height with stand (or I could put it on my carpet. If its a smaller that would be great, because I would have no room to walk with a tank that big...

What fish would be good??

Is this impossible

Thanks

Here's a link with some suggestions:

I don't know if I agree with all the suggestions, but it appears that a fast and somewhat aggressive medium sized fish would be able to hold its own in that tank with a pictus cat. Barbs might be a good choice.

Thanks Gunnie!! That is the best list I have seen.....What do you think about one Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid (Microgeophagus altispinosus) with a pictus in a 10 or 20 gallon tank?? Its only 7-8inchs for fish both together, 5inch for the pictus and 2 inch...

I wouldn't even try it, pictus cats can get 10 inches and will eat anything that fits in their mouths. I recomend getting rid of the cat because they are going to need a far larger tank than 20 gallons.

this has been our expierence with Spotted Pim. Pictus...

We have a very laid back pictus in our 65g, I think he is at about 5 inches... and he loves the hunt. He ate all 20 neons that were in that tank, and when he was done with them he ate all my guppies... He was only about 2 inches when we got him, in late-July, and hes about 5 inches now.

However, we have another 3.5 inch pictus in our 45g, and he hasnt grown much at all, if any, since we got him in mid-July. His personality is totally different than our guppy eater... hes scared of his own shadow and is constantly moving.

...what size tank would be good for him and possible a medium/large agressive fish, that would stay near the top/middle of the tank?? What would be my opinions for good other fish?

Would a Bolivian Butterfly Cichlid (Microgeophagus altispinosus) be ok?

(Also should I be posting this in different area?)

Thanks
