American vs African

Is it absolutely necessary to keep African and American cichlids separated? My fiance and I are leaning more towards American as we love oscars, but he has recently mentioned to that likes the bumblebees. Possible for them to co-exist or no?

Thanks for any insight!

It's hard to say. You might just need to leave ample room for both and see if one is being too aggressive. Each fish acts differently...

Bumble bees will kill anything they are kept with.
Even fish of their same species.

Yup....they are nasty buggers. African cichlids should be kept in an area/species specific tank only. It takes a long time to get the right combo of african species to work from one lake let alone from different areas.
I'd pick one type or get another tank so you can keep both.

Thanks all! I think we may just get another tank... That's the best solution if you ask me. I'd really hate to have to choose.

I recently moved to Miami there is a big canal behind my yard. I recently saw a huge albino Oscar it was amazing for a second I thought I was in the amazon.
I must admit I love seeing non natives as the canal is full of them . Those oscars truly get huge

Sal, I've seen a bunch over near NASA... same thing, they live in the ponds and canals, and they're definitly big enough to catch and eat!
