My Golden Algae Eater has Dropsy. Question???

Hi there,

My Golden Algae Eater seems to have Dropsy.

The scales are sticking out and she has bloated up, also red hemorrhaging is showing.

I keep my water at 26C and test the water every week just before I do my weekly 30% water change and my water looks great.
I vacuum the tank every week.

So how does my fish get this? Looks hectic.

Also what I need to know is it contagious Will my other fish get it

I've searched the web over and nowhere can I find out if it contagious. Is it ?

Ps. I had separated her from the rest and right this very moment she has died

Oh gosh, I hate dropsy. Hate hate hate it. I've had two fish get it.
Dropsy itself isn't contagious, but there are many things that can cause it that are, and some that aren't.
Dropsy is kidney failure that causes fluids to build up in the body cavity, thus making the scales poke out.
I'd keep an eye on the other fish, but I've never had it spread, but it doesn't mean it can't.

Thanks a million.

I will keep a close eye as usual. I just did a 50% water change and a good vacuum.
Hope no one else gets it.

Dropsy it self is a symptom of something else going on. Frequently water quality is an issue but you have cleared that up sufficiently with your readings. Another thing that causes dropsy is bacterial infection and that usually calls for a round of antibiotics. Erythromycin is the antibiotic of choice. Dropsy is very, very hard to cure and once the hemorrhaging has started the fish won't live long. Please keep us posted as to how he/she is doing we do care
