Eye infection?

Hello,

Yesterday I noticed my Cherry Barb alone and seperated from his 3 tankmates, He was hovering in the same spot away from all the other fish. One of his eyes has protruded a bit, there is a clear mass or gobule around the eye. The other eye seems to be perfectly normal,I'm wondering if maybe he is recovering from an eye nipping or if it may be something more serious.

Thanks,
Jonathan

It could be an injury, or sometimes it's due to water quality. Have you tested the water lately? It would be helpful to know results in numbers for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate at least. What is your maintenance routine like?

Hello, Welcome to Fishlore!

I agree with the above poster. Also have you added any new fish to the tank recently?

You said in your aquarim info that you don't know about the nitrogen cycle.

Hello. Hate to hear your fish is ill. Here are a couple of links you may want to check out concerning eye disease. Best of luck.

Reply,

Thanks for the responses, and the warm welcome . My routine maintenance consists of weekly 25% water changes,I also make sure to shake the filter cartridge thoroughly in the water extracted from the water change. As for the details on water condition, I have a Mid Range pH indicator available.
Recently I did add a couple of new fish into the tank which were purchased from a neighborhood fish farm. They seem to be doing well although some of the newly introduced gourami are constantly sparring, but their aggressiveness is gradually less apparent.

welcome to fishlore jonathan!! did you get the test for your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates yet? it could be a cycle issue as your tank is so overstocked in that 29 gal tank im sorry to give that info to you, but its big enough for 2 angels , your cories, and barbs...the rest are either too agressive or will get too big for that tank....if you can find a great deal on craigslist.com, (alot of great deals lately check it out!) that would help you alot for now and in the future...I think he probably is being picked on but not positive without a pic...the agression is going to get much worse if you dont rehome some of those fish soon...

Progress,
I did the weekly 25% water change only this time I changed more of the water. Ph reading is indicating 7.0 (Neutral), I don't have any other test available. I added some Epsom Salt into the tank to aid in recovery. This seems to have helped, the cloudy mass around his eye dissipated but the eye itself is still swollen.I'm hoping it's just an injury, all my other fish seem to be doing fine.

Thanks for the replies,
Jonathan

salt and MOST of the fish you have in that tank, will not work..they cant tolerate salt at all....if you can, get a test kit asap as I still think its something with the water parimeters....the ph you keep talking about, isnt an issue and usually doesnt really matter as long as its stable and doesnt change often...stop worrying about the ph at this point, you need to do some water changes and if you can , find some prime for the water to neutralize ammonia and nitrites, in case you have them...it will also help with the chemicals in your water....until you get a test kit, API master liquid is a great one as it has everything you need, id continue with partial water changes everyday ...goodluck
