Today I watched one of my males chase a female relentlessly for about 10 minutes. He would not leave her side, then he started rubbing up against her and shaking very quickly. Is this mating behavior? what do you think he is doing?
I think i read somewhere that this is mating behaviour and it sounds like it is, ive seen videos of tinfoil barbs mating and they do exactly what your cherrys are doing, so i guess being both types of barb, they would mate in roughly the same way..
That is definitely mating behavior. The male is trying to get the female to drop eggs. When she's ready, both of them will get in a plant and together go in spirals among the leaves.
Thanks for the help guys! The males keep chasing the females allover the tank and rubbing against them. Will I end up having fry or is there a good chance that all the eggs will get eaten?
They are egg scatterers and notorious for eating the eggs. Most likely if they don't the other occupants will. Watch the plants closely maybe you could pull some eggs and hatch them.
