| That's what I'm thinking. You should always have at least 2 females for every male.
Can you post pics of all the cherry barbs? |

| | Moderator | I've never heard of anyone having problems with gender in a non-livebearer, schooling fish. I had several male gold barbs and one female, and never had any problems.
There's a much more basic issue at stake here: The cherry barbs aren't in a proper school. This can cause them to present strange behavior. In a school, the fish are constantly jockeying for position, but if there are six or more, no one fish gets picked on (unless it is injured or ill, which draws predators). With less than six, a weak one could be considered an easy target by the rest of the barbs. I would suggest getting at least two more cherry barbs, providing plenty of hiding places (so the weaker ones can hide while pecking order is established), and keeping an eye on them. |

Now I have a school and everyone gets on perfectly.
To tell the sex: males are more red, females are a lighter colour. |

| | Fish Keeper | Maybe it's schooling problem? Your 3 current cherries probably have already made friends and are half way schooled? So you can't just add one cherry at a time to join the group. You've gotta add like 2 or 3 cherries at one time so they can all join the group. It's happened to my cherries! I added 1 cherry to the group of 4 and they killed that 1 little guy. It was a 2 males and 2 females. The new one was a female. So my point is, you've gotta add them at 2 to 3 at a time to a group. Hope it helps! Good luck! |

| | Fish Keeper | I had 10 cherry barbs ...2 males 8 females....one male decided that the whole tank was his territory and kept everyone...10 glowlight tetras...6 albino corys and the other 9 cherry barbs in one tiny corner of the tank....I tried to rearange and it didn't work. the rest of the cherry barbs were very peacefull....he was the only one...musta got a shot of extra testosterone in the egg...lol. I lost them in a ICH outbreak. |
