| Genders of my Cherry Barbs Yesterday I went to go out and get some more fish, since I will be getting a new 20 gallon tank, and I bought a pair of cherry barbs.
The Petco person said that one was a male, one female, but I think they might both be males.
Can anyone help me by confirming the genders please? xD
I think the red one is male, but I'm not sure about the other one.
I've attached pictures, but some aren't very clear x.x |

| I think you have a male and female! 'Cause males are more reddish during spawning time. I love Cherry Barbs btw! |

| Sweeny, you have a male and a female. I really suggest you get at least one more female. |

i love those fish! they are cute! | Yeah! They're nice and cute as you say! Btw, having two females and 1 male is good enough.
Well, I hope you enjoy these cute fish and good luck! Try to update me with more news about your CBs. Hope you can successfully breed them! |

| Are the males always going to have some red?
Or will they eventually turn the same color as the supposed female?
And when I just looked in my tank, I /thought/ that the supposed female was starting to turn reddish. But it might just be a glare or something. I'm really confused. x.x
But if you guys say its female, I'll stop worrying.
Btw, is the male ready to breed, since he is a really bright red? Last edited by xSweeneyx; June 28th, 2008 at 04:19 PM.

| Males are always red but get a brighter red during breeding. I would get a few more females if I were you. It will help aggression and make your female happier.
The females are always orangey and a little more "plain" and more bland than the males. |

| You have one male and one female. Your first picture, the one in the upper left, has the male within the decorations and the female near the front. Here the some pics of the female cherry barb, and the male cherry barb (in breeding condition, the colors appear much more intense, like the picture of the male cherry barb) |

| That helped a bunch, thanks!
So my male is not ready for breeding yet? His red is not nearly as dark/bright as the one in the picture you posted. |

| When in breeding mode, your male will be a deep scarlet. He will harass your lone female relentlessly, which is why I say you need at least one more female, and two would be even better. |

| If it's very dark red already, then it's ready for breeding! You just have to get a few more females. The eggs will be released into the water and might hang on plants or rocks. So when the eggs are released, you have to remove the parents to prevent them from eating the eggs! Good Luck!! |

| He's still kinda light-ish. So I don't think he's ready yet, but I can't wait!
But...it seems like neither of my cherry barbs are eating...When I sprinkle the food in, the platy and molly go up and get it, but the barbs just hang around the bottom hiding.
I think they're still really shy, so I dunno what I should do. Maybe move them into their own tank for now?
And also, I've researched them a bit, and it says that they can eat vegetables? What kind of vegetables can they eat? I'll try to add in a bit of that too. |

| Here's a couple of questions:
1. What kinds of food(s) do you currently offer?
2. Where did you get your fish from? Maybe they're accustomed to different foods
3. Are any of the fish bullying them? Do they have any injuries or differences in appearance?
And they can eat sliced cucumber and zuchinni weighted down with a pebble |

| Hi I'm new but I have cherry barbs so I thought I'd say hello here...
I have 3 male cherry barbs (Mike D, Ad Rock & MCA). That's correct; the females aren't as colorful as the males, and Sweeney, I'm sure you have a male and female there. But my males have always been deep cherry red after a day or so of settling in to my tank. And my barbs are strange - they don't recognize vegetables as food, but they love sneaking bites from the cories' algae tabs. Stinkers!
My barbs had been playfully peaceful up until a few days ago when I started leaving their light on longer. I don't know if there's a correlation or not, but I wish they'd stop it.
Good luck with your cherry barbs! They're fun. I love mine. I've had 2 of the 3 for a couple of years. Last edited by BipBop; June 30th, 2008 at 10:29 AM.

| Right now I'm feeding them TetraMin Flakes, and they don't seem to be responding when I sprinkle in the flakes to feed them. I got my fish from Petco, and they said that feeding them tropical fish flakes would be fine. And I am not seeing any bullying going on, my platy and molly are really peaceful with them. I haven't seen a problem with any of the fish so far.
Thanks for the vegetable suggestions, I'll give it a try |

| Cherry barbs will eat anything, usually ravenously, but should have a variety of food - flake, frozen etc.
Since there's only two of them, they might be too timid to come to the top. The larger the group, the braver they get.
Try moistening some flakes first so they'll fall to the bottom, or drop some frozen bloodworms in. |

| I have a cherry barb too and also a glowlight tetra for company. I'm getting more cherry barbs this weekend. I fed them flakes but they didn't eat it. Barbrella's idea is good! lol |

| I have 4 angelfish 10 glowlight tetras 3 cherry barbs and 6 cory cats in my tank....at feeding time I have 4 angles at the top begging...they get 1st pick...lol..as soon as the food hits the water the glowlights are hitting the top and feeding...the cherries are a little shy and hang out about 6 inches down in the plants and ornaments darting out and grabbing little bits as they float by and going around the bottom to. The cats will get whatever is left ( if any ) and their own shrimp pellets or algae wafers. |

| I tried moving them to their own tank, so they wouldn't be as shy (or so I hoped) and I sprinkled some food in, but no reaction whatsoever.
Then, I tried some sliced cucumber, but that didn't work either. They wouldn't eat that or the flakes. So now I'm not sure what to do. I'm afraid they're going to starve.
I would feed them blood worms or brine shrimp, but I have no idea where to get any of that. Uggghhh. x.x |

| Try getting some more barbs, it should help the become more courageous and outgoing around the aquarium. In a ten gallon tank, you can have as many as five. |

I have a new cherry barb (#4) and all the big guys have been stealing his food, so I threw in a shrimp pellet (they sink), so now he's eating alongside the corys. At least he won't starve until he gets big enough to hang with the big boys. |

| I caught the female eating a flake, but thats pretty much it.
No luck with the male yet :/
Maybe I should switch food? I only have the Tetramin Flakes and goldfish flakes and pellets, so I'd have to go buy some other stuff.
Btw, what is the difference between goldfish food and tropical fish food?
Can tropical fish eat it? E.g Cherry barbs? |
