confirmation

heyy, im planning to start keeping fish again (hear that it relieves stress ^^). so i've done my homework and reviewed all the facts - nitrogen cycle, pH, temp., compatibility...and my budget =p. After much reflection, consideration, and analyzing, i have come to the conclusion that a 2.5 gal aquarium and everything necessary to maintain it properly is within my budget. The question now, is what can i put in it? i've thought of a betta plus a cory...but then i fear for the cory's well being. So i've also considered of just a betta, but that lead me to wondering whether a 2.5 g would be big enough for the betta? im open to other suggestions/concerns/etc... so feel free to express your views ^^

Welcome to FishLore!

Glad to hear you are getting back to fish keeping!

If you are looking for Betta advice you have come to the right place. I've never had one but I think I may be the only one on FishLore who hasn't lol. You will be getting some good Betta ideas any minute now.

Have you considered a used tank? There are good deals on Craigslist and in my experience a larger tank is easier to maintain. With a used tank you can get more tank for less money.

Just a thought.

Have fun with whatever fishies you decide on

Welcome to FishLore
Personally, I wouldn't go with less than 5g's for a betta, however other members keep them in 2.5.
Here's our Betta Care Guide

Good luck and be sure to post pics.

Good job on researching! that is great!

As Sue said, Craigslist, kiji and freecycle have used aquariums for economical prices. If you want to start out with a brand new tank, then i suggest you go with a 5g. I believe 2.5g minibows (i suppose that's what you're looking into..) are as much as 5gs... Check walmart for their tanks, they have very good prices, and the reviews are good too:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=12177653
(the page says 37-48$ but its not that much, its about 25-30 so its not very expensive and comes with everything, all you would need is a heater and the deco)

Hope you enjoy the site!

THANKS ALL!! ^^ hm, see the thing is, i don't have enough room for a 5g =(...or more acurately, im afraid my desk can't support a 5 g's weight... and i don't want to put the tank on the floor cuz the temp might fluctuate drastically >.< so what if i only had (say, 2?) cories in the 2.5g?? would that work? and i was actually looking at the rectangular 2.5 g aquariums =p

one more question, how much does water weigh? XD

and and and that Cycle product that matures new aquariums quickly, does it work? =p

Hello. I've merged your posts to save some space since there were no responses between. There is an "Edit" key at the bottom of every post for corrections and too for additional thoughts.
Thanks!
Ken

I think it's 6lbs per gallon. It'll be more with gravel, of course. With a 2.5 gallon I wouldn't worry to much about the weight. You could sit a few 1 gallon water jugs on the table to see how it does with the weight.

so just to put it all together, a single betta in a 2.5G tank complete with filter, heater, gravel, and a tall plant, possible even a little decor thing (that i still have to decide on), can live happily ever after on my desk, right? if there's anything i'm missing, please tell me haha i'm a born again noob XD jkjk =p and that Cycle product, does it really mature new tanks quickly

also, would the aquaclear 20 power filter be suitable for a 2.5 G tank?
