I Have Been Sold A CAE By "Mistake"

Hi there! After going to LFS yesterday I bought 1 fish, that she labelled Algae Eater. Then After getting him home I thought he looked a little lonely, so I returned to the shop to pick up another two...I told her my tank size etc and she was more than happy to sell me two more - thing is, I gets them home and notice they're different to my first fish. So I does some research and find that the fish I have been sold will grow huge! And will well and truly out grow my tank! I have researched it all night and THINK I have 2 SAE and 1 CAE (BUT there could be 2 CAE and 1 SAE the others markings are a bit...hit and miss...not sure if he is spotty or not...) The biggest one is the one I got first and alone, so I'm figuring he is the CAE. The other two look dainty in comparison and are less murky brown looking and their horizontal band is prominent but one of them has spots on him around his band. I have noticed two of them rest propped on their fins (the two smallest ones - Alf and Rupert) and they rush around a lot like maniacs, I've also noticed that they have very white/silver bellies but I've not seen the larger ones belly to compare.... I'm kinda just after some advice on what to do I guess...should I take all 3 back and demand a refund? Should I take the suspected CAE back and demand a refund? Should I keep them, see how things go and if they get MASSIVE consider a bigger tank...or passing them on to somebody with a bigger tank..?

The tank has been bought for my sons birthday and he would like some Tiger Barbs in the tank (eventually - its not his birthday yet) and I guess I just want to make sure these 3 are going to be okay in there with them...at least until they get big and I can move them out....? Or until I can think of some other solution... for now it's nice to watch them all play together.

It depends how big your tank is? But with my experience with them they will suck on other fish

Your choice on the refund

I love my chinese algae eaters. Actually, I am down to one now - the two normal colored ones I had I gave to my sister for her pond - she has TONS of algae (or should I say had). I kept my yellow cae since that one was my favorite of the three. From looking at the pics in your other thread, it looks like you have at least one chinese algae eater. The others I am not sure about. They could be flying foxes or siamese algae eaters. What size tank do you have? They could get along fine as long as the tank is large enough. The chinese algae eater will need at least 20 gallons right away with the idea of moving him into a larger tank (55 gallons or more). He will also need at least two (but will prefer more) hiding holes such as caves or hollow logs. He will eat mostly algae for the first several months, but then will want meatier foods as he grows. He will still munch on the algae, but will need shrimp pellets or bottom feeder omnivore tablets. Mine loved the omnivore tablets when I had them in for the winter. For their size, chinese algae eaters are little piggies. They will eat 3-4 tablets each night and still keep most of the moss off the tank. The main two reasons they go after other fish in the tank is #1 hunger and #2 territory. If you cover these two things, then you shouldn't have any problems with aggression.

Here are some pics of my yellow (most of the time) chinese algae eater and then some pics of the two normal colored ones going into my sister's pond. As you can see, there was a lot of moss - Most of that is now gone.

Oh, and I saw my yellow cae today out in the pond - he has turned completely yellow again - not a speck of green/gray (or any other color) anywhere...
