hi just finished cycling my tank which catfish...

i just lurve catfish and although im disapointed that i cant keep discus due to the condensation problem im having with the tank not allowing the temp to go bove 26.c i remember just how much i enjoyed keeping a pictus catfish in my last tank.
just wondering when could i add my first catfish? and which one could it be ...i love the markings like the tiger shovelnose and the perrruno but i know although my tank is huge 350litres its no whee near the size that these fish require,
ny ideas?

You can add your first fish when your tank is completely cycled = zero ammonia, zero nitrites, and low nitrates.

Yeah, since Tiger shovelnose can reach 4 feet at maturity, I'd say that's just a wee bit too big!

There are so many different kinds of catfish, it's just really what you like and can provide what is needed for a particular species.

You might want to browse Planet Catfish. They have a huge store of information and search tools!

I have such a hard time picking out catfish. There are so few I do not want. Plecos are especiallymy favorite. I still really want a red-tailed leopard, a sunshine pleco, and a starry night pleco. I need a 1,000 gallon aquarium.

Agree that pictus are just lovely (hardy too!) and a small school of them is very entertaining!

There are TONS of gorgeous small plecos out there - many much more beautiful than large ones!

Just a few favorites:

Queen Arabesque

Blue Phantom

Common sp.3 Bristlenose

To find many more, go to www.planetcatfish.com and do a search.

In this search page, put "loricariidae" for the Family Name, then just type the size you want.
