what kind of catfish?

When I was in my LFS last night, I saw some little catfish that looked pretty much like some kind of cory except they had a very large dorsal fin -- the store had them marked as "whipfin cats" and when I asked the woman how big they get, she held her hands apart 8 or 9 inches. Anybody got any ideas what they might be? And anybody but me wish these stores would use the latin names so we wouldn't have to be having these discussions?

I did a search for whipfin cats and could not find any. Are you sure they werent whiptail cats?
I have included a photo of a whiptail cat below. Does this look like the ones from your LFS?

Lots of petstores seem to make up their own names for fish.

Possibly they could have meant "Featherfin", which is the Synodontis Eupterus.

Did it look like these?:

Synodontis Eupterus

didn't look like these -- the body shape was very much like a cory and the tail was fairly normal-looking. I may have to go back with my camera!!!

I have a couple of featherfins so I know it wasn't those either -- these were silver/gray with black markings -- marked more like the whiptails. I see another trip to the store in my near future.....bummer!

I think I may have figured out what this cat is -- I was just messing around on planetcatfish (trying to figure out which pygmy cat I ended up with!) and found a picture of corydoras longipinnis. It looks just like the fish I saw at the LFS except it doesn't get anywhere near 8 inches long. The lady at the store couldn't POSSIBLY have been wrong, could she?

Here's a link: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog...pecies_id=1008

thanks for all your input!

LFS employees are frequently wrong about their fish.

went back to LFS -- asked a different person about this catfish. Paleatus cory -- longfinned variety. And yes, I got 2!!! They are getting along with their 2 panda companions extremely well and are very adorable with their long fins as tall as they are!
