my catfish has slowly been losing the black stripes acroos his back over the last week. is this some sort of molting or is it because he needs a better diet. the only thing he eats is algae i havent ever fed him anything else but what grows in the tank.

it would be best you give him a varied diet, and not just the algae in the tank. Whiptails will take anything from algae wagers and shrimp pellets to fresh zuchinni and spinach. Before moving onto the vegetables, try feeding him manufactured vegetarian food first. They will not thrive on algae alone

I believe they also need some wood in their diet. Does it have plenty of hiding/sleeping places? Is anybody picking on him?

no he used to be picked on by the tiger barbs but he would always slap them upside their heads with his tail. i bought both shrimp and algae wafers ill try lose for a little while thanks for the help. and i also got rid of the tiger barbs.
