i brought a glass catfish today without researching it first then realised that it is a schooling fish. the lady at the pet shop never bothered to tell me this either. will it be okay for a week by itself until i get another chance to get it some friends?

Is your glass cat eating when fed and swimming around normally?

i havent even seen it since i first put it in! it hid under a fake log for a while and now its gone. i didnt see it come out when i fed them. cant see it now. guessing it might have not made it through the night but there are plenty of things it could be hiding in too

well, you could move around the decor to try to find him or wait for him to appear.

well i figured that doing that might stress him if he is still alive so i will just buy another 3 or 4 and see if he appears and if not i will still have a school now that i know they are a schooling fish

I know with my glass catfish it took quite a few days before he started eating. Now he goes crazy all over the tank for the food. Sadly he is alone and not planning on getting him any new buddies. We had purchased the last two at the store that day and the second one died within the first few days. We had a few aggressive fish which we no longer have. I have also noticed that that he loves to chill right above one plant thats near the water flow. So you may try and find a tall plant of put a plant near the top on the side of the tank.

I have 4 glass cats, in my tank... they do not swim around with the lights on, they just hang together in one spot all day hovering... as soon as I go lights out, they are all over the place. I usually leave a lamp on in the room, turn the lights out and throw some food in there, and they will eat then. Maybe, if you turn your lights off, you will find that he will come out.

Glass catfish will never do well alone - they MUST be in a school. Glad you're going to get him some buddies!
Start them eating with something like frozen bloodworms to get them going.

I did the same thing and only bought 1 at first. I wanted to make sure the angels didn't shred it before I bought more. It did fine until I bought 5 more a few days later. Sinse then they've done great, even with 2 angelfish 10 times their size.
Mine mostly hang in the shadows around the bases of my amazon swords during the day and roam around the open water at night. The angels mostly leave them alone, I don't know if they can't really see them, or if they just don't see them as a threat.

I could be he was just hiding while he adjusted to the new surroundings... I've had a lot of fish do that the first few days... so don't be too worried if the others do the same. Although if there's already a glasscat in the tank swimming around the new ones just might school up to it... it'll be interesting to hear what happens.

so i went to the pet shop to get some more and they only had one. i got it. better than none. i dont think they have found each other in the tank yet but they are both in hiding. they will probably meet when the lights go out or at their night time feeding session

Even 1 more should help... trust me, they'll find each oter soon enough.
My glass cats seem to be most active during the evening. I have 3 lights, all on overlapping timers. During the early morning and late evening the only light I have on is a small coralife 18watt. I call it my twilight light, and I started using it based on something I read somewhere about loaches being dawn/dusk fish, and recommending trying it. Well, make a long story even longer..lol.. it turns out this is when my glass cats seem their most active as well. I'm not sure, but if they behave like most cats, it's likely they're active all night.
