I'm a brand spankin' new saltwater aquarium hobbyist. In addition, I'm a big butterfly fish nut (hence the nickname.) My question for all those more experience than I is, if i wanted to have a tank with nothing but butterfly fish, will they all be compatible with each other. All the compatibility lists I've looked at address other species of fish, but don't mention other butterflies.

I dont know much about butterfly fish....but I wouldn't suggest putting them in a saltwater aquarium, it'll dehydrate them and they will die, because they are freshwater!!!! =p
I'd stick with saltwater though because they are generaly more colourfull and exciting.

Most of the butterfly species that will do well in captivity may become territorial if kept with other butterflys. You'd need a very large tank to keep multiples.

I pretty much like all butterflyfish. not sure why. when i dive i find myself hanging out with them while they do what they do.

I know me too but did a search for saltwater butterflys and there they were. Both fresh and saltwater butterflys are intriguing.
Didn't think to look in our own FishLore profiles. DUH!

gl they are very pretty fish but be careful they arent to be kept with corals

Does anyone have any African Butterflies (freshwater) in their tanks? I have three and am fascinated by them. However there seems to be no way of differentiating one sex from another. Does anyone know anything on this subject?
