| Latest project - Tank stand Stand Rebuild;
As mentioned above, the stand I used was just a cheap plain jane steel stand. I wasn't really thrilled about the look or the structure of it. But, I'm off work, things are tight, so I made due..
The first thing on my list was to re-structure the stand to make sure it would hold the weight. Originally the stand was held together with a few spot welds here and there. It was stable at best.. So I welded the entire stand solid. Every seem, every corner, anywhere 2 pieces of steel met. Next I welded in 4 gussets for a little extra strength. After this I welded On some 4"x4" feet out of 1/8" flat stock, Just for added security that this narrow stand that is about to become very top heavy doesn't tip over. After all my fabricating was complete and I was satisfied, I ground down all my welds, and gave the whole stand a fresh coat of black paint.
Next Came the cosmetics.. I wanted to dress the stand up a little bit, and for this I used 3/4" ply wood and some stain that I had out in the garage.
First of all I wanted to mount a piece for each tank to sit on, rather than just have the outside edges of the tanks supported by the stand. I also thought it would be nice to enclose the space between the bottom of the top tank and the top of the bottom tank. Just to hide filters/wires/etc.. So I cut out 3 panels. One for each side, and one for the front. The side panels are permanently fastened to the stand, but the front panel sits on 4 pins I made. Very easy to remove at feeding time. Its nothing too special, but for zero dollars invested I think it turned out alright.. |
