Breeding Saltwater Fish - I know wishful thinking, but we gotta start somewhere. Hopefully we can share what we know and learn to improve the chances of other hobbyists routinely breeding saltwater fish!

Agsansoo's Banggai Cardinalfish Breeding Log

Some of you might remember me from my maroon clownfish breeding thread. This time I will attempt to breed and raise Banggai Cardinalfish. I currently have two pairs of Banggai Cardinalfish in a 65 gallon reef tank. On July 16th I spotted the largest male with babies in his mouth. Last night was the night of the fry release. For those that don't know already, Banggai's are mouth brooders.

This is only the first batch. I hope to raise a few more batches. The fry a tiny copies of the adult Banggai's.

Excellent! Although kept some, never had the pleasure. Congrats! As you probably know, these Bengaii are disappearing in their natural habitat due to over harvesting. Hopefully thru efforts made by hbbyist like you, we dont have to harvest anymore.
They are so CUTE!!!!!!.
Although have read in mag of successful breeding, didnt have the CLICK in my gut until I saw your babys. Very tempting. I am already thinking of setting up 45G.

Good luck with this batch and lot more to come.

Thanks cerianthus, wasn't really ready for these guys. My live BBS won't hatch until tomorrow. Hopefully I can keep them alive. I've tried frozen cyclopeeze, frozen BBS, instant BBS and otohime. They are not liking any of those.

Do you happend to have dried anchovies? Smells pretty bad , well I meant vefy fishy.

What tank are they in? Have you ever tried Boiled egg yolk on f/w fry and mixed with crushed (close to powder) anchovies?
Dont know if would work as well as it did with other hatchlings but just a thought.
Only one caution with such is that it can foul the water quickly due to a fact that majority of such food given are probably on the bottom of tank decaying. Thus requires water changes per feeding afterward using water from Main Display Tank, not fresh batch of salt H2O.

Hope Baby Brine will do the trick. If they do, consider Mysis and Plankton.

My children caught 1/2" puffer about 4 weeks ago from the ocean along with 3 seahorses. Puffer did not have any problem taking fz mysis even at that size, swimming around half of mysis sticking out of its mouth. Very Greedy. It's already close to an inch.

Good Luck.

cerianthus, thanks for the suggestions. I have heard about boiled egg yolk, though I've never tried it before. I did manage to get some live BBS hatched tonight. The fry love them. They now have gut loaded orange bellies. All five are still alive.
