Re: help me decide

I assume you'll be keeping him in his own home? They also need large homes because they can get pretty big.....Nearly 12"......They're semi-agressive and tend to eat smaller fish so it's wise to keep them separate. They will tend to dig up plants so if you do plan on planting your tank make sure to weigh the roots down. They prefer sandy bottoms with a few large rocks.

None are all that easy to care for, but if I were going to keep an oscar or two, I'd go with Tigers. They aren't easy to breed though and need a large tank to do so.

Re: help me decide

I think that is the reason Shrimpy wants a fast breeding fish, to feed the oscar.

I agree with Vin. those tiger oscars are really beautiful. BTW can you or vin tell me how large they get? Or are the oscars all basically the same size?
thanks, kate

Re: help me decide

Any livebearer (guppies, mollies, et al) would be a quick breeder.
Breeding your own feeder fish is better than buying them, anyway. More nutrition, less disease, as long as you take care of them better than the fish stores take care of theirs.

I've got it now....I was giving him infor because he was thinking about getting an Oscar......However now that I've re-read - Feeder fish by me are .10 each. It's not like they eat 10 at a time. At least not while they're small.....Livebearers would be the best way to go, but in all honesty by the time the fry get large enough he'd be buying fish for several months....Oscars don't need live fish as a staple...They eat a variety of foods. Supplementing them with live feeders is the way to go.

They get pretty big...Up to 12".....They need really large homes because of their size.....These pet stores that sell them don't tell you that and send you home with a 10g tank....As if that will be large enough....
