Baby Brine Shrimp Hatchery & Vinegar Eels Cultures

We're looking for good advice on the best way to setup a baby brine shrimp hatchery and to setup a couple vinegar eel cultures to feed the mahachai betta fry that we expect to have in the near future. Who's set these up before and how do you find is the best way to do it and to harvest the live food for the fry?

Thanks,
Stacy & Dave

Re: Baby Brine Shrimp Hatchery & Vinegar Eels Cultures

http://www.fishlore.com/Forum/112-di...-anyone.0.html linky linky Butterfly uses the DIY method, I have yet to try it but I use sanfransico bay brand hatchery. It works good for me and is easy to feed babies in a hurry. If you want pictures of how I do it I have some. If you use the hatchery I use I would use two and alternate them so you have a steady food supply. I get tons of bbs every hour once they start hatching, I don't know butterfly's hatch rate

Can't help with the eel cultures

I'd like to see pictures of how you do it.. i think that's what they have at petsmart? my diy skills suck so it's entirely possible that i'll need a store bought hatchery even if i brave the attempt to make my own.

Re: Baby Brine Shrimp Hatchery & Vinegar Eels Cultures

1. hatchery next to window-they hatch during the day rapidly, but at night when I'm sleeping the hatch rate slows done, works well
2. Here's what it will look like in about an hour
3. Spoon and bottle of eggs

What I do is buy my own bottle of eggs and use aquarium salt, can't remember who from can find out later for you.* I have figured out a little recipe that keeps them hatching for 1-2 weeks.* The salt water is heavier than the fresh water and I fill the little cup with fresh water so I can just take the cup and pour it in for my fish, fill it up with some more water and keep doing it and not have to clean it.* That's my favorite part about it, and it hatches large enough quantites for me.* I'll have to test out betterfly's this summer.* I'll give you the recipe if I can remember today, if not ask me.

Here's what rose's way with less DIY http://www.sfbb.com/product_popup.as...Hatchery&id=38
Here's mine,* http://www.sfbb.com/product_popup.as...hrimpery&id=37 cost me 8$, I used the packets but didn't buy them, instead bought the smallest bottle of eggs by the same brand

Get some eggs and salt, mine is just a aquariums salt, probably tetra I'll check later, it's NOT marine salt though.

If your going to get the hatchery, get two so you'l have a steady food supply. The eggs will last you awhile, so two tubes would be good unless you don't want to order them for a long time, then get a lot. 1 gram hatches over 2000 sometims 3000. btw: I use nutrafin aquarium salt.

Re: Baby Brine Shrimp Hatchery & Vinegar Eels Cultures

I found tons of good sounding (also non-conflicting) advice when I did a Google search for vinegar eels just now. Searched for "Vinegar Eel cultures" "Raising Vinegar Eels" and "buying my first vinegar eel culture"

This last search brought up this site: http://www.aquabid.com, did a search for vinegar eels and several auctions came up. Although I'm sure that you can get cultures from other places. Hope that helps narrow things down a touch, best wishes and let us know how it all turns out.

And then I read the next strand where you say you are getting your cultures given to you :P Ah well, the first few articles on the other searches seemed pretty good, so maybe they will help you out. Best wishes and warm fuzzies to all your little guys and girls

Thanks. Our little couple seem to have cooled it a little after the bubble nest 'disappeared' on them. so hopefully they'll wait until we're all ready for their fry.
