how many will survive

i have 2 cherry barbs and one is very fat now and they were chasing each other around if i let them lay the eggs in the community tank (30 gal with a large piece of wood java moss wisteria and one other plant forget the name and 8 neon tetra) how many do you think will survive to at least the point were i can catch them and raise them in a separate tank.

thanks everybody

I'm not into breeding fish, but I'm pretty sure barbs are egg scatterers that spawn in groups.

Cherry barbs are very easy to sex, but nothing can be assumed. Do you know for sure the fat one is a female?

If you have a seperate tank, I think it would be best to have them spawn in that tank and then remove the adults. This is based on different sources I've read, not experience. Again, breeding fish is not my thing.

Catching the fry when after they hatch from their eggs is a different story. Because other fish and even their own parents can eat the eggs. So it's best to remove the parents and any other fish from the tank where the eggs are as Jaysee said.

You can check out the link to our Fishlore's Cherry Barb profile above on how to identify the male and female and suitable temperatures for breeding. Good luck!

Hello Garrett. If you're fortunate enough to have fry in the main tank they'll need lots of hiding places. I see your tank is planted so that's a great help too. Fry also like to hide in Java Moss and you can purchase breeding grass (plastic if necessary) for them to hide in.
It's hard to say how many would survive.
Best of luck!
