Peppered Cory fry food

I have Peppered Cory fry that are 3-4 weeks old. (I have they date they were laid somewhere - if I could just remember where) There are probably about 50-60 of them. The eggs were laid in a 10 gallon with play sand, free floating java moss, and a sponge filter. Monday, I moved them to a 55 gallon with plant substrate and the same sponge filter and java moss. The 55 is only filled about 6 inches which probably seems like an ocean to them because they're so teeny.

My question is what should I be feeding them at this point? I have been giving them Hikari First Bites but I'm wondering if something else would be better.

Also, I read that I needed to get the breeding tank down to 65 degrees to get them to breed. I pulled out the heater and that worked to lower the temp. I couldn't find any info on what the tank should be at for the eggs and then for the fry. Does anyone know? It's at about 75-76 now.

Hello Sue. Congrats on the fry! Usually a temperature fluctuation of either a couple of degrees up or down will trigger spawning in many species. Obviously what you did worked so I'd continue to do it the same way Too, a change in diet will trigger it as well or along with the temperature change.

I don't have personal experience with Cory fry. I'm sure some other members will be able to help you out.

I'm sorry did I miss the Photo shoot of the fry?
Have a great weekend!

Try and get the 55gal filled up all the way. If you have 6" of water lets just say that is 15 gallons of water. Once you get it full, 55 gallons of water is a lot easier to keep stable than 15 gallons of water. Just my opinion.

Also to add to what Ken said, yes a temp change will help trigger a spawn like he said. However I would achieve this by doing a water change and trying to drop and or raise, both have worked for me, the temp a few degrees. I wouldn't unplug the heater, although that got the results you were after, but fry are fragile and now you have the task of raising their temp back up to normal. The temp swing at water change way, your water will return to normal temp normally within the same day so you are back to the desired temp you want while triggering the spawn with the quick but temporary change.

You weren’t expecting “good” pics were you?

There is one fry on the Java Moss in the center of the first pic. Just squint a lot… The second one is the big picture shot. It doesn’t look pretty but they seem happy. I’ll try to get some better ones.

While switching them from the 10 gallon to the 55 gallon I took the Java Moss out and drained the tank down to about an inch so I could catch the fry. The babies were everywhere and could be seen so easily against the light colored sand. I kept thinking I should take some pictures now because I’ll never be able to see them against the black substrate in the 55 gallon. I was just too lazy

I raised the temp gradually while the eggs were in the tank after I took the adults out. I read 65 degrees for the parents to breed but I couldn’t find what the temp should be for the babies after they hatch. I made the assumption that free-swimming fry should be at a similar temperature to what the adults require. The eggs took a week to hatch. I don’t know if that was because the temp was to low.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I should be feeding these guys? I'm still giving them Hikari first Bites but they're all at least 1/4 inch now and some are 1/2 inch so it doesn't seem like enough.

BTW I filled up the 55 that they're in and added a bunch of driftwood that they seem to like and the temp is 78.

Hello Sue. It's been a long time since I've had fry of any type but I think you could start feeding them some adult food. (portion size that they can swallow easily). I read something in the past that stated, 2 weeks of fry food should suffice and then go to adult food. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't.

Thanks Ken!

I'm sure they are ready for some type of adult food, I'm just not sure what to give them.

I've crumbled flake food and added that to the tank thinking it would sink and they could scavenge for it on the bottom. For some reason, maybe because there is only a sponge filter on the tank, the flake just stayed on the surface of the water and started looking icky.

I also tried shrimp pellets but they didn't touch them and I had to net the pellets out after it started getting rotten.

I'm going to try smashing some shrimp pellets and see if that works.

If anybody has any ideas l'd be glad to hear them
