Green Terror Breeding

Hey guys,

I have a female GT. She's laid eggs about 3 times in the last 6mo so I am 100% sure she is female...

I bought her a male or what I was told is a male... But I need to know for sure. Anyone have some specific tips on sexing GTs?? Ive done some research online and the pics are not clear or the descriptions of a male actually apply to my female etc... I cant seem to find any clear facts!

Im hoping to establish a love connection... the 'male' has been acclimated to my tank at home and I plan to introduce him to Mrs.T once I make sure he is in fact, a he. If he ends up being a SHE, itll be dead. My female green is probably the most aggressive fish I have seen and has already torn apart or bullied fish to near death... I dont want to risk harming this new GT....

when I had my terrors years ago, my male had the big hump around his head area and his dorsal fin was long and pointed that reached the end of his body...my female wasnt as bright as my male either...allot like jack dempsey sexing IMO ..hope others have more info!! and its a great idea to be sure before you put them together..and even after you do, id remove her, switch the deco around, and let him go in for an hour or so before readding her...even the gals can be territorial

Just a note for you, if she is that aggressive she may also not "allow" a male into her tank.
Just providing a for sure male will not take away the possibility of fighting, should make it easier especially if she is close to laying eggs she will be more willing to a male, but you never know until you try it.
Have any pics?

Ill post up some pics tonight...

Hm Shawnie - You may be right. My female is actually brighter than my male... BUT, the males dorsal is significantly longer...

btate - Im hoping, hoping, hoping that she'll mate with him. lol.

To help this out, Im actually moving them to a tank of their own - that way its a new environment for the both of them... Oh yeah - thats the other part of this question: What setups have proven effective with you guys? All I need is some places to hide and a flat rock?

What size tank are you going to move them into? Also how big are they?

Here are some crappy pics I managed to find from when I had my pair.
Sorry didnt have a decent camera back then.

One of the biggest way in sexing them is having the fish the same age and growing them out. Males will grow much faster sometimes double that of females.
Although it isn't 100% way of determing sex, you can notice the pointed fins in the male compared to the female in these pics.

And when they decided to spawn in was in a small over turned pot. This pic is right after the eggs hatched.

Good luck with the fish.
