One rescued Platy fry

This morning while feeding my fish I noticed a little Platy baby swimming at the surface. I decided to rescue it and I put it in a small critter keeper with some of my main tank's water and a trimming of Hornwort. I wasn't planning on trying to rescue any fry when my platies gave birth but I just couldn't help myself. Will it be ok in the critter keeper or will it need it's own filter and/heater (the temp. in my house doesn't get below 74F.) Thanks and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know how big your critter keeper is, but the ones I've seen are about a gallon. Fry need really clean water, so regular partial water changes are important. If you can put a little bit of your substrate from the main tank in the little tank, that might help. Check out what kind of fry food you can get a hold of - they'll be too small to eat anything larger than a fine grain of sand.

I know - it's nearly impossible for me to see babies and just leave them be. It certainly helps assist the MTS.

Congratulations on the platy fry! I've found it's easier to get a breeder net and keep my fry in the large, cycled tank in the breeder net as opposed to putting them in a separate tank.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. I just got back from the pet store and decided to get the plastic breeder so I can put it in my main tank. And I got Hikari First Bites to feed him/her

Thats great! im glad you decided to save the little guy, its really cool to watch them grow large enough to live with the adults. when you first let them out of the breeder they look so happy.
good luck with him/her
