Pregnant or just fat?

Hi all

I'm not sure if mumma mollie is pregnant or not.
She was quite obviously pregnant previously, and had a small very dark gravid patch about.... 2weeks ago?

Now she's huuuggeeee but I can't see any gravid patch. There is a darker shadow along the line of her stomach but I just don't know anymore!!

I was thinking maybe she'd gotten bloated, but she's really not interested in any veggies I try for her.

I know the pic is bad qual, she's definitely not a poser. I had to be cruel and slip my net into the tank to get her to hold still for that and she was NOT happy with me.

I'll try for a better one later

Thanks!

she could be..especially if there is a male in there with her or she was exposed to a male..but shes not close to delivery yet..shes still too round....fast her for a day and then offer her a piece of thawed, deshelled , frozen pea the size of her eye for a few days if you think its constipation....but if she has been around a male, dont attempt that as she needs her food for her babies that shes most likely carrying ...once shes totally squared off and not rounded, and the gravid spot is more predominant , then you can be ready for babies

EDIT: if your aqaurium info is correct, it is recommended to be having 1m to 2-3f ratio with live bearers...that way she isnt harrassed or killed from the males being so agressive towards her

Better pics!!

Edit: No that info isn't correct anymore. I should update it

She has a baby molly and some young guppies keeping her company right now and is definitely getting along really well with them. The male guppy is still a tad too young to be very agressive, and she's way bigger anyway.

Do you actually mean she's gonna get FATTER? I swear she's ready to explode right now. I call her mumma or the little whale o.O. When I had my nose pressed to the glass trying to take pics I think I saw a hint of a gravid spot, but on my other females it's extremely obvious, hence the worry considering her light colouring.

how longs it been since she was around another male? they can store sperm for some time....is she acting normal otherwise? she definitely looks bigger than the norm so either constipated or preggo...is the baby molly hers? if so, you must have seen how big she got before..if its not, yes she will get bigger and her belly will be more square not as round...usually 28 days or so is their gestation

No the baby molly isnt hers. Just one at the pet store (only baby, pure white!) and I couldn't resist her. I swear she thinks she's a guppy though. Hangs around with the female guppies only. It's been maybe a week without a male, but she was definitely in the mixed batch. I think she's been chubby about 3weeks now. Nearly 4 I guess. She also doesn't actually eat very much. It's mainly the male guppy and baby molly that gobble the food. I've tried peas and brocolli on mumma but shes not interested at all. Guppies and tetras go wild for peas though, and the baby molly is learning from them (I swear she's a guppy in disguise!)

Edit: Her (mumma's) attitude has changed a fair bit in the past week, but I'd say thats more due to tank changes. I had her alone for a bit, which didn't work, so I got her the friends. She's gotten progressively bolder and happier looking since.

well in another week or so, you should see some changes in her ..and if she has been this big for 3-4 weeks and hasnt squared off yet, you may have to try to pea routine...and as well just make sure the tank parimeters are up to par and not in a mini cycle(just read your other thread Molly self love?? )..it would be a good idea to get your own test kit as relying on LFS to test for you, leaves a ton of doubt as they arent very reliable at doing so..and most use the test strips which also are not reliable...if you can find an API liquid master test kit, you can test for everything you need and it will do 100s of tests for you in that one kit....always a good idea when owning fish to know exactly where the water parimeters are at all times...good luck with her !

Yes I forked out $90 for my own test kit and all my numbers are good. I did leave a piece of broccoli in last night to tempt them and this morning my ammonia was up a smidgen (not even halfway to 0.25) but even without water changes everything is back to normal.

broccoli makes more of a mess than its worth ..the pea routine makes it more tempting as its small and looks like fish food.....what type of kit did you get for $90...holy smokes!

The API test kit. I did say on another forum that it's expensive here. For the master test kit at my "usual" store its $81.05. I did find it for $60 at another store, but they had none, so I got a $50 kit (made by API but under a different name. all the bottles in the kit had api written all over them) but had to buy the nitrate tester to go with it which was $26.00.
