I need to know the terminology for fish breeding such as spawning--is that mating ? fry--are those eggs or hatched babies ? who takes care of nest, babies etc-male or female or does it depend on the breed ? Any other info would be much appreciated. Also, I want to breed my blue gouramis but not sure of their sex--how can I tell? One is bigger than the other but maybe one is just older than the other.The bigger one has been chasing the little one but never nips at it--is this aggression or possibly mating ?

spawning = the act and laying of eggs...fry are usually free swimming babies not the eggs themselves....depending on which fish depends on eggs or live bearing babies....male /females of each fish take a role depending on what species again....gouramis are egg layers and they build a bubble nest to put the eggs in ...they can be very agressive and even kill at times when breeding....can you get a pic of your gouramis to help us sex them? if they are the same sex, it could be total agression you are seeing and one can get hurt.....

if they dont post, they probably have to be resized smaller...so if you get a blank upload, then resize and try again

question: I have a 30 gal with african cichlids--1 Hap morri, 1 elbino peacock eureka and 2 others that we dont know what they are--one is peach in color, the othe white with peachy colored fins. Do they have to breed with their own kind or do they just breed any cichlid?

they will breed with one another which will have an end result of a hybrid.

cool!! I know next to nothing ! I dont even know what sex I have ! Tried taking pic but they are camera shy ! lol!! How do I tell a male from a female ? I can tell the diff between guppies, lol, but not gouramis ! One is chasing other but it is aggressive behavior or mating ? what is mating behavior like ?

how do you tell males from females ? or does it depend on their breed? So many questions--dont mean to be a bother ! I have been bitten by the fish bug and I can not get enuff!!!!!

Go to aquarium community . Com it is a really good site but to sex them you look at their dorsal fins. The males will be longer and pointed while the females will be short and rounded
