can i mix mollies and swordtails?

hi guys! total noob here.. i'm planning on breeding some swords and mollies. would it be alright to put them together in a tank and still get them to breed? will the fry still grow if i put some plants ( or moss) in the tank?

your opinion is appreciated..

Welcome!
Swords & mollies will not crossbreed if that's what you're asking. Otherwise they will co-exist quite well.

G'day and welcome to Fishlore.
If mollies and swords eat their young, java moss will give the fry some protection, but for how long I would not know. When our molly gave birth, we put the fry into a net cage that attached to the side of the tank and kept them separated.

they will live more than happily together, but if you intend to successfully breed them, the fry should have their own tank. what size is the tank you're going to keep them in? and what other fish is going to be in there with them?

i'm planning to put hem in a 10g tank. and only swords and mollies will be there. i'm not intendin to crossbreed them.. just their own kind.

so the fry must be separated sometime after birth with a separate tank. how big/small should the fry tank be?

I put 40 Black Molly in a 3G tank for awhile and they seemed to be fine there for about 3 months until I gave them to the LFS

i have 30 molly fry and 7 guppy fry in a 7 gallon tank. keep the fry's and adult tanks temperature at 80F and a pH of 7.5, that is great breeding conditions for live bearers. also try feeding the adults a mix of flakes and frozen/live foods.

oh and sorry, when i wrote "breed them" i meant their own species, sorry. they will not cross bread, only swords and platies will breed or guppies and mollies.

From my experience, mollies and swordtails can crossbreed. In fact, I have a fish which is mix of baloon molly and a swordtail.

Ive never heard of swordtails/ mollies, but ive heard of muppies( molly guppies). I have a livebearer fry tank with around 50 guppy fry and 10 platy fry, i put them into the main tank at around 4 months and sell them about when they are six months.
