mollies and platys cross breeding?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi, does anyone know if balloon mollies and platys can cross breed? our platys were breeding so we gave the male to a friend, but now the female is still having babies. we were told by the pet shop that they must be cross breeding but i'm not sure! The male left around a month ago, can she still be having his babies? sorry we are new to this! my kids love the babies but we are running the risk of overstocking the tank! HELP!!!

both balloon mollies are male, sorry didn't mention that

i'm fairly certain that only platies and swordtails can interbreed, and mollies and guppies, but no other combinations.

Welcome to Fishlore! No, they can't crossbreed, only the combinations that Alex said can interbreed. The females can store sperm for up to six months though, so you could well have fry for a while yet!

Mollies and Platys Breeding

Hi I am new to this forum but I have been breeding mollies and platys for some time now. They are an interesting and friendly little fish. I also have a few mollies/swordtail babies that are doing quite well. I have two males that are silver with beautiful black spots and the tails have begun to develop a very pronounced black stripe. I only have one female but she is also spotted black and silver. They have a very odd way of swimming. It is almost a begging posture. Should be interesting to watch them as they develop. They are about nine weeks now and about an inch long. I will try and get some good photo's on here. Thanks Debi!
