Angel fish pair

i have heard female angels pick the biggest males to breed with in wild, but in cap. they just make do with what theirs my pair have started laying and guarding but the male don't know what he's doing i do have a pair one has a club and one has spike, i think the male maybe alittle over weight and his gut stickes out both sides would this make him firer blanks? he is the biggest and strongest of the males i have hes 1 year old

Many angel pairs don't get it right for several spawnings. The males size won't have anything to do with whether he is able to cover the eggs. I think their just inexperienced.

It could be from over eating or constipation. Have they been 'going' ok?

try to feed him some peas in case its SBD then fast him for a couple of days and see how he does.

Edit: a symptom of dropsy is that your fish may be bloated other symptoms are raised scales and loss of color so you may want to look out for these signs. good luck.

rapid gill movement is a sign of ammonia do you have your readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?

either fresh or frozen are fine as long as you remove the shell and defrost the frozen ones. you'll want to cut them into small pieces as well.
