I purchased a black sword tail fish and the pet store told me she was pregnant when I got her. I cannot see any of the sign I have read on here, like a black spot (since she is black) and eyes. She is just fat. I also have a Dalmation Molly that has gotten fat and I do not want to put them in the spawning box needlessly. I read that Mollys will give birth in 2 weeks and she has been fat almost that long. The Black swordtail I am not sure, since they told me she was pregnant when I got her. I am very new to the world of fish and read a lot but have not been able to find my answers. Any help would be appreciated

Firstly Dont take every thing LFS people say as the truth. Many have no idea about fish.

Now do you know that bothe your fish are Female? If they are then they are probaly pregnant. Mollies/Guppies/Swords can store sperm for up to 6 months so if they have been in with males they will get pregnant.

Does your sword tail have a sword on it? If not its Female Only males have the nice pointy swork

hi they will give birth approx every month however i have several females that have bee pregnant alot longer but couldn't understand why they were holding on to the babies and this morning discovered my heavily preg female dead or at least we thought she was it turns out she had some sort of internal infection but had no outwardly signs of this R.I.P Bluetail So i think they knew she was ill and thats why the wouldn't give birth. Don't want to scare you or anything but as i have discovered not every female that is fat is pregnant, so just keep an eye for any signs of illness....good luck
