I found ONE fry.

Hi all! I fed my fishies dinner tonight and noticed a baby fishie swimming around! I have no clue where it came from since I have not seen any eggs. I fished it out and now it's in a half gallon tank in the water from the main tank. I don't know whose baby it is.. I have 5 neon tetras, 1 albino cory, 2 rosy red minnows, 1 platy, and 2 female cherry barbs (the male just died a few days ago).

I will do some reading but anyone have any quick tips for me at the moment? What do I feed it? Is there a way I can keep it in the main tank without the other fish eating it? I don't want it to die..

Happy Holidays all and thanks in advance. I will try to get a picture but it's really really tiny.

Hi,

How long ago did you get the platy?

Do you know if it's a male or a female??

It's possible that if the platy is a recent purchase, it might have come to you already pregnant.

Live bearers give birth pretty easily. Egg layers (like the rest of your group) don't lay eggs so easily, although it's *possible* that it could be from them. There's a small chance, but I'd bet on the platy.

oh that would be cool. the platy was added to the tank 11/26 and it's a female. i put the 1/2 gallon into the large tank so it could be kept warm and sprinkled in some really crushed up flakes.

Well, most female live bearers have 3-4 weeks of gestation before they give birth, so I'd bet that your girl came to you just barely pregnant.

There's a possibility that she'll have more... I'd watch for them. They can hold sperm to use for several times. Also, sometimes fry can be sneaky and hide in the plants.

Just keep checking!

Congrats on the fry!

There's a few different type of breeder boxes you could get to put the fry in. 1 type is made out of fine mesh net with a plastic frame, another type is hard acrylic with vents for water flow. They just hang on the edge of the aquarium and sits in the water. I would put a few plants fake or real, doesn't matter much,to give the fry a place to hide.
