Made a "Spawing Net"...With Photos!

So none of the store bought breeders seem to work for the danio so I made my own breeder/spawning net. Hopefully this will work. My danios seem to be spawning constantly but I have yet to have any fry. I think they are eating all the eggs so I came up with a system so they cannot get to them. I tried the large rock/marble bottom and neither worked. They just swam right down through the marbles and rocks and got to the eggs. It was a very cheap solution(Maybe..it hasnt worked yet haha). I got some nylon net from the fabric store and used chip clips to hold it in place. Then placed some rocks in the net to sort of level everything out. Please let me know what you think or if anyone has any ideas to improve my design.

That's a fairly quick and easy set up,to stop the "egg-robbers". The only suggestion I would make,is to use stronger clamps than chip clips. For the intended purpose,it's a neat and functional idea.

The clips are these sprint promotional calendar holders. Girlfriend used to work for Sprint and we got alot of goodies haha. They are very strong...take alot of squeeze to get them off the lip of the tank. I might go to the hardware store tomorrow and try to find some real clamps. Thanks for the suggestion.

Let the forum know how it works out, please. I have danios and have yet to have any of the fry that I have seen survive more than a day or two. I am super interested in your outcome!

Update....Well so far it seems to be working. Fish are spawing so they cant be that uncomfortable with that net in there. I will know in about 2 days if I have any viable eggs/fry. If nothing in 3 days I am going to separate my males and females for about a week and try again. I will keep everyone posted.

Another Update: I have danio fry!!! I can only count 10-20 of them but I see more eggs that were dropped today so I can only assume I will have more. The spawning net works!!

That's excellent. I always love it when a plan comes together.

Now that it works,we need info. what size mesh you are using? Any trouble from the fry getting stuck in the mesh, parents trying to get through it,that sort of info.

OK last update, I swear: All the fry are free swimming and appear to be doing just fine. I had alot more than I first thought...I was able to count 40-50 and there are probably more. I will get some photos as soon as they are large enough to photograph. MTS has kicked in again as my danios will not stop spawing so I have purchased another 3 tanks as step up tanks for the fry. I will get photos of that also as they begin to fill haha.

Yeah they do haha! But the fish seem to love the there. They get down in between the net and rock to spawn.

How exciting! What kind of material was the net? My danios keep spawning into a lava rock covered with java moss but nothing ever makes it to hatch.

Don't forget about those pictures!

It was nylon net. Purchased at a local fabric store for $0.99 per yard. I spent $2.13 on this little idea and have enough to make 10 more of these nets. As of this morning, they are all swimming and healthy. Photos will be coing very soon.

That is such a great Idea. You need to go to the DIY forum and post instructions and pictures ! we could lock the thread so only you or a mod could access it to add pics or info. what do you think?

Go here http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/diy-do-yourself/ and just start your thread just like you did this one with pics and keep adding pics as it/fry progress. If you make changes or improvements add those also.

More Photos....

More photos of the danios zipping around inside the spawning net. A couple of them paused long enough for me to take a photo haha.
