| I have a fry? of albino plecos (not a bristly faced one) and I know nothing! My husband and I have always managed to set up a healthy attractive tank, but apparently out of luck! I've been reading some of the posts and we must have been lucky because I have never tested the water in the tank, didn't even know I was supposed to. We have two albino plecos (didn't know that they are a male and female) and just noticed a couple of days ago that we have babies hiding between the slate rock (along with what I'm assuming is the male, who is guarding them). What I was hoping to find out is how long before they are swimming around and ready for another tank? Am I supposed to buy food for my plecos now that there are so many of them....there are snails and 3 neon tetras in the tank as well. We have always had plecos and never had to feed them before, but I just read something about algae waffers? Is there anything else we should know?
Thanks |

| you will definitely need some algae wafers if you plan to keep them, it is unlikely a single tank could keep up with a lot of plecos. Do you have an estimation of how many babies there are? how big is your tank? are you going to purchase more tanks just to keep all these plecos?
As far as feeding goes, I don't know if the babies need anything special while they are growing, but algae wafers will make it easier for the parents to get the food, and probably take a little stress off.. You don't have to worry about tetras or snails eating the baby plecos so they are fine in the tank for now. |

| Our tank is aprox. 45 gallons. From what I can see there are about 15- 20 babies. We are not planning to keep all of them, probably only one or two for our other tanks. The parents are only about 2 inches long, I don't know specifically what kind they are. We never expected the two of them to breed, we didn't even know we had one of each sex. I'm not sure what we're going to do with them when they start moving around the tank, it's going to be next to impossible to get them out. Our tank is only 3/4 of the way filled with stacked slate rock forming a waterfall (the pump is hidden behind the slate rock). I think we're going to have pull the tank apart to catch them when we figure out what we're going to do with them. |

| yeah probably will,if you want you can get a hanging net-tank thing to put them in, just make sure u give them algae wafers if you do that, I don't know if it will work if your tank isn't completely full either, but they are usually used to seperate fish for any reason, and it would be really easy to get them out if you did that, unfortunately there diet would consist of algae wafers and nothing else, and I don't think that's very healthy. |

| your babies are fine for now...the rocks will help them survive any predators...put in a piece of zucinni or cuke once or twice a week over night and remove whatever is left after 12-24 hours...they love it....get a flashlight after about an hour in the tank and you will be able to see all the babies feeding off of it....not to mention we would love some pics! |

| Shawnie, I remember reading on a post that shining a flashlight into a tank after dark with nocturnal creatures inside could cause them to go into shock. Was this incorrect? |

| im sure it is if the room is entirely dark with no other source of light....id be scared too!! but they are tough fish ... but if you have other light on in the same room, its fine...I check out all my plecs with a flashlight to make sure they are doing ok and eating but my tanks are in a living room with a tv on, or a bedroom with a computer on , etc |

| I noticed today that they are not grouped together quite so much, a few are starting to stray, they're actually really cute! I expected them to be more white than orange, the parents were white when we bought them and gradually turned a sunshine orange, it must be our tank or maybe the colour enhancing food we feed the tetras is affecting them? Weird.
I was able to get a pic of the female, like I said they aren't very big, only about 2 inches (not the babies, lol, the parents). I took a pic of the male in his hiding place, but you can barely see the babies above him, I will try putting the cucumber (you did mean cucumber, right? I don't have any zuccini right now) in tonight and maybe get a better pic tomorrow. |

| Our two are really frisky, they come out all times of the day. We noticed the babies on Thursday, they weren't quite finished hatching yet.
I found out that it's quite difficult to get a decent picture of something in a fish tank!! |

| WOW, they're like bunnies!!!!!! Well, I certainly wasn't prepared for this! Since my first post about my unexpected fry of Plecos, they have had two more...the newest babies should be swimming around the tank any day now. I was able to get some half decent pics (of the ones already swimming around, not the new babies). |

| Oh Yeah, We recently noticed our male is getting little bristles on his face....is that a male/female thing, or are they different breeds? |

| Males usually have at least a few bristles. Females usually don't but if they do it's just around the lip whereas the males is all over his face.
Beautiful babies by the way

| Awwww....look at the cute little babies!!
One good thing is that you should have no problem getting a petstore to take them, and even giving a few dollars for them. Around here, at least, albino BNs are very popular and pricey too! A 1 1/2" baby is around 12.00
The bad thing is that usually once they start spawning, they never stop! |

| Thats true. I would have happily paid $50 for an Albino Bristlenose but couldn't get one anywhere. Even my normal BN cost me $20. |

| I'm in New Zealand. It can be a real pain to get anything slightly out of the ordinary over here. My Oscars cost me $100. |

Where I am oscars run wild. Our walmart's cheapest fish are oscars. (not that I'm suggesting buying oscars at walmart!) |

| We paid almost $40.00 for our pair (14.99 ea. + tax). I have to figure out where I'm going to set up another tank so I have somewhere for these little guys to grow big enough to sell, my tank is getting a tad bit full. I counted 41 this morning....that's only the ones that were out in the open, I don't even want to know how many were hiding in all the slate rock (not to mention the new babies that aren't swimming around yet)!). Anyone in Southern Ontario that wants an Albino Pleco, let me know, it looks like my pair are trying to meet somekind of insane quota this year and I have plenty to spare! LOL |
