Angels just spawned...

There must be something in my water, because fish are spawning all over the house. My breeding pair of German Blue Rams are with fry (75 +/-), a pair of Peacock Gudgeons spawned unsuccessfully. Now two of my Angels have spawned in our community tank. I thought that I was down to 2 females and one male, but we had it reversed. Of the 50 or so eggs there are only about three that developed fungus. Based on behavior, I'm guessing it was my Golden Veil who got with my Marbled baby mama. Right now, the eggs are on an Amazon Sword leaf and I haven't decided if I should remove them to another tank. I will probably let nature take its course with this first batch. I will post some pics tonight.

It looks like another tank may be in my future.

Ha, when I saw the title of your thread, I thought the same thing.

I would remove the angelfish eggs they died very quickly here. Our pair hasn't gotten it right. Then again they've been exposed to the parasite here..so may that interfered with their instincts somehow.

So far, their instincts seem to be spot on. Mom is fanning the eggs, and is gently bumping the leaf to remove the few fungused eggs. Both parents are keeping everyone at a distance, but they will let the other male angel to get pretty close. We observed several neat behavior over the last week, and now it all seems to be adding up.

First, we lost a Pearl scaled Marbled Koi angel unexpectedly last week. That angel ruled the tank when my male GBR was in the breeding tank. After that fish died, the Gold Veil and the large Marbled Veil began fighting pretty bad. It looked like the Marbled Veil was more of the aggressor, and certainly was winning the battle. I am guessing mow they were fighting for the right to the lone female. Appearently, the female chose the Gold Veil, because we are sure he is the daddy. Now the two males seem to be getting along fine, and the fighting has stopped.

I am leaning towards pulling the eggs, but want to wait until the last possible moment to observe the instincts of the parents. I beleive the eggs were laid sometime yesterday, and should take about three days to hatch. Is that about right. My choices are as follows:

1. Put the leaf in a breeding net and keep it in the community tank.

2. Do nothing.

3. Hatch the babies in the breeding net in either the community tank or the breeding tank which currently has the GBR fry (and parents). Then remove the adult GBRs and raise the fry together.

4. Buy another tank, to use a fry grow out tank. I have plenty of seeded filter material stashed in several of the other tank filters, as well as Safestart in the fridge. I can usually get a tank up and running within two day. This option will create tension with the Spousal unit.

obviously your best bet is a new tank lol...but a breeding net should do the trick until u can find a permanent tank to raise them in...see if your wife will let you get a 20 long...i dont think u will need a hood or light...all u need is a decent filter and a heater...it shouldnt put that big of a dent in the wallet lol

It's not the dent to the wallet that is driving her nuts, it's the fact that I travel for work 3 weeks out of 4. I keep adding tanks, and she and my son have to take care of them while I'm gone. It's the daily 50% water changes on the fry tanks that are making her crazy.

Something ate the Angel eggs early last night. I'm pretty sure it was the Cory cats, as they relentlessly went after the Ram eggs when they were in this tank. I am glad that I finally have a breeding pair, and will more that likely set up a breeding tank for them.

With angels, I like to pull the eggs when they really start wiggling. Usually about the 4th day, if they make it that far. I keep them in a small 2.5g tank with a heater and sponge filter that has a tiny drop of meth. blue in it. The ones that make it to be free-swimming fry get moved to a bare-bottom tank with sponge filters to grow.

Yep Dave gave good advice if the eggs are being eaten.
I usually let mine go free swimming then siphon them out and move them to a bare bottom 10g tank with heater and sponge filter. Then do daily 50% water changes. Right now I have four batches of fry from dime size down to two weeks old

My Angels just spawned for the second time, and are currently on guard duty. My Peacock Gudgeons spawned unsuccessfully again. Skinny male lures fat female into his cave, skinny female comes out followed by fat male. Blue Rams currently have wigglers, which should be free swimming tomorrow.

I have set up a new tank, which will eventually house the breeding pair of Rams permanently. Right now, the Rams are in their breeding tank, which is soon to be a fry grow out tank. I have the only remaining Ram baby from the last batch in a 2.5g w/ heater. I can move the Angel eggs into that tank with the baby Ram, but I'm not sure if he would hurt them. I think he is too small to pose a threat, but not sure. If I get any fry from the Angels, they will be moved to the tank with the Baby Rams.

Congrats!! These storms and Hurricanes are causing spawning hormones to rage at my house too.
I found some frozen Rotifers at the LFS, if my Rams ever spawn again I'm going to try them to see if the fry will/can eat them.

That's a great idea, I'm going to hit the LFS tomorrow to see if they have them for this current batch of Ram fry.

Well, the angel eggs didn't last 10 minutes with the lights off last night. I had blue lunar lights installed, but it didn't help. I think it was the non-spawning male angel that ate the eggs, but I'm not 100 percent sure. The next batch of eggs will be removed and placed in a 2.5g until they hatch.

I start leaving my tank lights on at night when the eggs are first laid and don't turn them off until they go free swimming and I pull them. I think maybe if they can see all around and know who's there they will be less stressed and not eat the eggs/protect them better.
Just some thoughts.
