Pregnant Balloon

My baloon molly looks like she may be pregnant but as we all know it can be hard to tell as they're so bloated anyway.

Any hints...?

I have her in a breeder trap at the moment but I don't want to leave her in there too long as she may get stressed.

They get a little dark triangle shape appear near their bum usually, once they have had their first lot, you will just know next time.

Next time!?

This is a new fish - I've only head it for a week and I've not kept balloons before so I don't know what is normal.

I think she looks bigger than when I brought her home. I'm also pretty sure that I have a &

Do you have pictures? A lot of livebearers' chests look "square-ish" the day or two before they have the fry. A lot of livebearers will either sit just under the surface or on the very bottom of the tank, appearing to hyperventilate (pulling water into their mouth as well as gills to pull more oxygen.) A lot of livebearers will also try to hide to have the fry, such as in plants, ornaments, obstacles, etc. Make sure to give plenty of vegetable matter (veggie flake, zucchini, algae pellets, etc) to livebearers, usually about half their diet should be veggie stuff rather than just tropical flake. The veggie matter tends to cut down on birth defects and strengthens the mother into either having more or having more healthy fry even if the numbers do not increase.

(That veggie food thing was taught to me by our very own Butterfly. )

I'll get a pic up as soon as I can - I'm at work now.

Re this veggie thing - I have tried on a number of occasions to get my fish to eat fresh veg, but they're just not interested.

I've tried Lettuce, cucumber, Pepper, Onion, garlic, Mushroom, carrot, peas and beans - You name it, I've tried but they just sniff it and spit it back out. None of my fish are interested.

Any ideas?

Put any of those veggies or all of them together in a blender/food processor with about a half of a cup of water and puree. (Garlic would do good here, adding an immune-boosting agent to the food.)

Mix 1 small packet of unflavored gelatin into veggie puree.

Freeze in ice-cube tray or some other small container of the sort.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You could go as far as making an all-around food by adding a can of crab meat or fresh/frozen non-oily fish to the mix or even some small shrimp from your grocery store.

When feeding you can either shave bits off, swirl the cube in the tank, or even just submerge cube and rub it gently with your thumb or fingers to get small bits off.

Our fish go wild and it takes 15 minutes a week for me to make enough to feed 2-3 feedings that week for 160 tanks each time. So in 15 minutes I make 320-480 tanks worth of the stuff.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want the easy way out that takes less time you can feed veggie flake or mix flake foods, algae pellets, etc.

I made fish food today with hair algae, left-over kale, crab meat, tilapia meat, garlic, and water. (The kale had sat in fish tanks for 3 days and was what was left uneatten, so they will eat it this coming week. ) (Kale is awesome for a slow to breakdown vegetable for plecos, otos, etc.)
