I am new to this hobby, but I noticed that my male high fin platy, which I moved out of my 29 gallon tank was trying to breed with my pregnant molly! The black sailfin molly father died 2 months ago... The high fin platy never bothered her before, perhaps he has matured and is confused..with her being the only female livebearer around...Anyway, I have heard about this, but didn't think it would happen in my tank. But I was worried about him being a pest so I kicked him out. I think she might have aborted her pregancy. Is this pesty male to blame? She had a baby July 19th, but still looked pretty rotund until he started jumping her bones... Though I guess it could be a coincidence...I am cycling the tank and perhaps it is stressing her as well.

The increased stress could have caused her to abort, that is a possibility. The cycling of the tank is another possibility.

Livebearers tend to TRY to breed with anything that looks kinda like them. (Keyword is TRY because only certain fish can breed across the genera. Genera = plural of genus.)

Yeah, genetics don't usually work that way, haha too bad I was hoping for a plolly or a mlaty.
