Why do some of my baby mollies have pointed tailes?

I made the mistake of getting a pair of mollies now I have oh to many to count. Anyways some of the babys have tails that come to a point instead of fanning out. I haven't seen that before. Is that a defect? If anyone has any information on this subject I would love to here it. Thanks

Could it possibly be a lyre tail?
Do both parents have the tails that fan out?

Yes they do. They are a couple balloon mollies. The appear to be totally normal

I have the same problem with my baby guppies...they are born normal...some stay normal and some get what I call pintail. They shimmy a little but not bad...seem fairly normal then die. I have researched it and the only thing I can come up with is a body fluke called Gyrodactylus. I am not sure if that is it or not and having no qt tank and inverts ( snails and shrimp) in my tank I have been very reluctant to dose my tank with coppersafe or quick cure. If you cure this could you please post it so I can figure out if it is worth taking the chance to treat mine to.

Wow that sounds just like what I have going on. I have so many babies I don't think I will worry about treating it unless it becomes an epidemic. It is only affecting a couple of babies here and there. My tank was originally going to just be a small 10 gal for my daughter but apparently my mollies are vegetarian and don't eat their babies like the pet store lady said they would.

I dont think i would worry too much unless they seem ill. They are probably just hybrid mollies. Some may show different genetic traits than others. Just like with my platies. I started out with all sunset, now I have everything from mickeys to swordtail crosses. Livebearers have so many different traits that in the aquarium and pet trade they are bound to cross.

That sounds like my one platy. It was normal when I got it but now it's pointed. It looks really sick though. it's shocking that it's alive. it was having trouble swimming for a while
