Holy Baby Danios Batman!
So the other day, I am looking in my tank, focused on an oto who is getting a really fat belly, wondering if she's getting that weird "fat sickness" I've read about on the forum... when my eyes focus on my UGF lift tube where there is a baby danio swimming around. (I have powerheads on the lift tubes but they were acting up so I turned them off last week.) I drain the water about 1/3 of the way down, pull off the powerhead and get the turkey baster out and put him in a bucket. Suddenly, there are two more in the tube. So I get my gravel vac tube and siphon until "stuff" stops coming up. There are now 6 in the bucket. Then I look on the other side - there are two more in the other tube. I do the same thing on the other side and now there are 18 in the bucket!
Needless to say, I am working on a game plan to take out the UGF, because it has given me nothing but trouble... honestly! Also, I really don't need anymore danios. Word to the wise: If you have a UGF and danios, check your lift tubes.
Also - I have had these guys on top of my fridge (an old seed germinating trick I carried over to this hobby) without a heater for about 4 days now and have been feeding them crushed up flakes. They are fine - seem really happy. I kind of assumed that if they were born in the "toliet" of my tank, they wouldn't require much although I am hoping to get out to the store tonight to get a heater and some actual fry food. I hope I don't sound dense, but do they really require filtration for the time being? I can't imagine that they would create so much waste that they would neccesitate a filter... but this is my first "fish mama" experience.... Any suggestions/ advice?
