About how big are they? looks like you got a good camera zoom there.

The bigger one is an inch now. It's so neat how each species fry acts exactly like their parents. Acei are very personable and always in your face.

that is true about the "in your face" lol. When they(our red fins) see me feeding the big ones, they group up in the corner waiting for food, or if you stick your face up to the glass they will come up to you. Kinda funny seeing 30-40 fry schooling to your face or bunched up. lol

question if you don't mind

how many fry do you have in a tank(size) and how often do you change the water?

Oh gosh...we had about 100 fry a month old in a 33g. Water changes every 2-3 days: I feed them John's fry food, 4-5 times a day. We've been getting awesome growth rates. Clean water really helps them grow faster.

do you stay home then? lol 4-5 times a day.. I'm only able to do 2. I could do water changes more though. We have 30-40 in a 20Gal and I do it about once a week. The water seems to be getting cloudier faster now that they are getting bigger.

Yeah I don't work. I am on disability.
Do you have another filter you can put on the tank...you can never have too much filtration with those dirty African cichlids. My boyfriend does the water changes on the big tanks, twice a week and I take care of the little tanks.
If you don't have another filter I recommend doing more water changes. With a 20g it only takes a few minutes.

in my 6 tanks and a python hose I can do my water changes in about 30 min thats 2 5g's, a 10g, a 20 long, a 36g, and a 55g... So I do 2 a week, one of my waterchanges is a vaccum...
Now I am going to find myself fry happy in about a week w/ 2 labs due to spit and a kenyi due (thanks to this mornings spawn) in 3 weeks so my fry tanks will be cleaned more often, but I am a stay at home mom and only work at the hospital on weekends as needed.

Johns fry food huh? I will have to check that out, I have been using live baby brine shrimp and crushed flake food...

Our 120g takes 15 mins to empty 25% and fill it back up. The rest take 20 minutes. So it takes us roughly the same time.
Pythons are the best invention.
Mine also go nuts for dried/powered brine shrimp. I don't like to use live food too much on my mbuna...they need the vegetation in the fry food. If you can find African cichlid specific food. I think that would show the best results. Next order of fish food we're getting it from kens fish. A lot more food for your . We figured to get food for all the species of fish we have it'd cost roughly $40 with shipping thru kens.

which one of the kens foods are you going to get for the fry? I found the site, and was wondering which one. I am mixing the bbs w/ spriulla flakes for the babies. For us it would be buying just african cichlid food...
I can already find a couple things that are a good price through his website, I am def getting an order together

We're not getting any for the fry right now. We still have unopened John's fry food. Those packages last a long time.
But we are getting Kens premium color flake & premium spirulina flake with garlic & paprika 1/2lb each for our cichlids. Found on this page:
http://www.kensfish.com/kensflake1.html
I am also getting betta and pleco food. To get the Nutrafin Max food at our lfs cost about $20 for two medium sized containers, which last us about a month or so. Getting 1/2 lb packs at a time for less money is definitely a good thing. The food is better quality too.

We've got 4 acei holding, the blue hap and one cobalt as of right now. There are still 3 cobalt females and the yellow lab female left to get knock up...hope they hold off a bit. We are getting a 60g tank soon to grow out the fry in...in a few weeks. With 6 fish holding that is potentially a couple hundred fry hopefully.

Our always end up holding within 2-3 days of each other. Good thing if they were a week apart I wouldn't be able to tell the female acei or cobalts apart. We could end up striping the wrong ones.
I better start studying the females to see if there any slight differences.
