Pleco Babies...

So I am kinda clueless when it comes to fish. I got some angel fish for my son and decided to get 2 plecostomus fish for the tank as well to help keep it clean, and now I have baby pleco fishes. I have counted about 7-8 of them. What my question is, is there any kind of special care that they need, or do I just let them do thier own thing? I have looked on the internet and most of all the sites just tell me that pleco fish don't breed in captivity, or they don't breed in house aquariums. I just want to make sure that I take care of them the way that they need to be tended to. Thanks.

Hi Stacia, Welcome to Fish Lore

Baby plecos, how cute!

I'm not knowledgable on angels or plecos but for others to help you, we'll need to know what size your tank is, is it cycled? What are your water parameters?
What kind of plecos?

I don't know if the parents will eat the babies but I'm pretty sure the angels will.

Until someone who knows more comes along to answer your question, I can suggest a couple of things, either make sure they have plenty of hiding places or move them to another tank. If you have one of those little breeder boxes that sits in the tank, you can put them in there.

Good luck to you and your fish, post some pics if you get the chance. We love them!

Welcome to Fishlore.

Check www.planetcatfish.com for pleco information. Are these common plecos? We'd like to have some pleco fry but both of ours turned out to be females. They tend to breed in tanks, especially with good conditions.

I'm not sure of special care for pleco fry, but I think the basics of really clean water, plenty of food and places to hide will be good and liquid vitamins.. we use Vita-Chem.

So now I have about 23-25 Pleco fry. The mama just keeps making more babies!!! The tank is about a 15 gallon tank. I have two cycling pumps. It's lined with little rocks, the baby fry seem to bury themselves in there to hide. It's so strange. The mama fish doesn't come out of the lighthouse anymore....she just disappeared one day and I figured out where she was. Next thing I know...more babies.

How do you tell the males and females apart?

Most likely that is the daddy fish. In the pleco world males take care of the babies and females lay eggs and leave. He will not leave his nesting place as long as he has eggs or babies. Does the one in the light house have bristles on it's nose?
