Spawning Angelfish

I see on here that people have had queries about the spawning of Angelfish, I have a pair that have mated and noticed they had spawned yesterday morning (for the third time) Now I know that they may take several times to successfully breed their young but the last couple of times they seem to have been doing everything right until nightime when I switched the aquirium light off and went to bed, then waking up in the morning and all eggs gone.

What I am wondering is would it be better to leave the lights on overnight?

It may be worth while to try it. They generally eat their eggs because they are afraid or nervous about something. So perhaps in the dark they get mixed up or if you have other fish, and they swim nearby they get worked up, thinking it may be threatening.

not sure what other fish are in the tank, but i had the exact same problem with my GBR pair for a while. not sure if it was the other fish or the actully parents.

id let them try a couple more times before seperating them from other fish

I read something that I think I'll try the next time our angel pair spawns. Leave a small night light on near the tank so they don't forget the eggs are their eggs.

Do you mean a nightlight in the tank, or something like a lamp outside?

Something outside the tank, preferrably near the area of the tank that the eggs are. Dim enough to leave dark areas for them to 'sleep', but enough that they can keep watch on their eggs.

Thanks Cobc, i'll give the lamp a try next time they spawn. I was so excited that they were doing everything right, was gutted when I woke in the morning, still perseverance is the key!!

The nightlight tip worked with our Angel's 4th spawning. We used a blue LED nightlight and they did take turns tending the eggs during the night. Unfortunately, they still need to learn to eat the bad eggs and most of this batch got lost to fungus. I saved what wigglers I could, but I'm trying to let them learn the instincts and only step in if the spawning is doomed as far as the angels go.

4 fry from spawning #3 are doing good in their little tank and hopefully will be joined by as many as 20 fry from this last spawning.

Hmm I have the same problem with my pair of rams.

I may put one of my led lights I got with another tank, would one of those work?

I would go with something more natural like a blue or white colored light. Many people think that these night lights simulate moon light and assist with spawning. I'm not sure a red light would create that sort of atmosphere.

I had the same exact thing happen - I saw the eggs on the filter intake tube with my two big black veil angels guarding over them on Saturday night. My plan was to go to the aquarium shop first thing Sunday morning to get a fry pen or a tank divider, but all the eggs were gone by morning. I'll try a small light the next time, but my question is: how long before they lay eggs again?

Welcome to Fishlore.
I'd recommend getting a piece of slate and putting it in the tank at a slight angle. Ever since we put the slate in, our female has laid her eggs there.

I use an extension cord now to plug the blue LED nightlight into and sort of hang it over the side of the tank that the slate is in. It really has the look of tank night lighting and the Angels tend the eggs during the night.

Typically, I read 2-3 weeks between spawnings but ours spawn every 8-9 days.

I leave the tank light on when my angels spawn. The reason being they can see all the other sneaky fish trying to get in and grab eggs and they can defend them better. it also makes it easier for them to be able to take care of teh eggs.

We just have a couple albino LFBNs in the tank with ours so one of the blue LED nightlights gives a nice moon-like light for them to watch over the eggs on the slate.
