We have babies!

We were watching the fish eat this afternoon and my husband saw two tiny fish near the gravel and plants.....and yes.....we have babies! They must be Cherry Barbs since we have nine females and three males. And you can almost see the Cherry Barb features - but they are very, very tiny.

I have a breeder tank(the little ones that float in the big tank) and have put one of the babies in there - we couldn't catch the other one yet. I'm going to the info and will see how best to take care of the little guys. Any suggestions?

Congrats on the fry!
Its always neat to see the little ones get big and start to look like the parentals. =)

Good luck with them.

BABIES!!! Gotta love em!!

I don't like using breeders nets or boxes....makes a lot of work, and often times it is harder for them to find the right things to eat....If they have survived this long, it might be possible for them to live in the tank, if you beef up the amount of cover they have.

Do you have java moss? Lots of plants, rocks, shells, driftwood? Any thing they can dart in and out of and find cover?

Water Sprite floating is also good, as it develops roots that hang down and the fry can hide in it.

This lets them feed the little scraps of food that drift around, and graze on algae from the plants they take cover in.

I have never had babies from eggs, and do know they are a whole lot smaller than live bearers......but this is how I raise my platties..It works fine.

We do have lots of tunnels in the tank, plus driftwood with java fern, some sword plants and I had just added some frill plants recommended by Capekate when we got (and lost) our gourami last week. I think you're right and I will let the little guys fend for themselves since they seem to want to stay in the gravel and eat food on the bottom of the tank. As you said, they've made it this far.....this is really cool!

I wanted to put some pictures up of our tank but I can't get them to resize on the site Mike recommended in the How Do I? section of the forum. We have a Mac and I think that's probably the problem.....we are still working on it!

Hi Faye, I'm on a Mac too - you need to use that website on Firefox, not Safari.

Thanks Aggie Yen - I'll give it a try!

I'm sure I can resize on my computer but haven't found out how yet - I'm still working on it!

Congrats on the fry!

You can resize pics in Preview, which should be the default program for opening them. You could also download Gimp - a free photoshop-type graphics program.

I have a mac too, and i use my photo software that came with my camera. If you click send in email attachment, and click compress to 55%, then just don't send. Drag and drop the image on your desktop, and then attach the image.
