Ameca Splendens Fry!

This afternoon, one of our 2 Ameca Splendens females dropped her first fry. She's only 5 months old, so she did really good to drop 5 fry. If you aren't familiar with them, the Amecas have 1 batch of fry per pregnancy and the fry are born BIG.. about an inch long.

The little ones are doing great, they've had 2 meals already and 4 still have their umbilical cords attached, but probably hard to make that out in the pics.

They are so cute! Congratulations! At what age do you need to separate them from each other?

They don't really need to be seperated. The larger ones don't try to eat the new fry with them being around an inch when they're dropped.

Most goodieds do better with the fry kept with them.
They are more a schooling fish than most other livebearers.

Yea, one of the fry has been trying to hang with the bigger amecas, even when he was hours old, at most. That's how I first spotted the fry actually. He didn't blend in exactly.

Yea, Ameca Splendens have some really big fry. The newborn fry are the size of our Endlers adults.
