Sand substrate okay for a breeder tank?

Hi. I am in the process of getting a 10 gallon tank for fry. Most say the best substrate is, no substrate. But you need hiding places for them such as plants and small caves and I know gravel would not be the best idea as they could get stuck in it and it needs vacuuming but would sand be a problem? I'd rather not leave the bottom bare, and I will if it's a must but if sand would not be a danger to them then I want to use it.

I personally wouldn't put anything except a sponge filter and a few plants in a fry tank.

Okay, I'll do that first. Just a mini-cave and some small plants. Maybe some large marbels.

Large marbles are hard to clean around and the fry may gt stuck under them. Otherwise your plan sounds great

I find the fry do pretty good with the small flat glass marbles but I think bare is best and sand would be just as good as them for a fry tank. The thing is with feeding the 4x a day to start, then 3x a while, then 2x finally.. lots of leftover crushed food to pick up and any substrate makes that job harder.
