When do you insert fishies into breeding trap?

I have two pregnant fishies. I dont know how long they have been pregnant. One is a guppy, she looks like she may pop. The other is a molly, she looks like she may wait a little longer. How long are both pregnant for? And should I put them in the breeding trap now?

Thanks Muchly

Re: When do you insert fishies into breeding trap?

guppies are pregnant for about 28-30 days before they pop and I am not sure about mollies but if you google it you can find out and they should'nt be put in a breeder trap at all if possible as it usually stresses the mother out and she may abort the pregnancy and die which happened to me or she may not depends on the fish but they should be put in there a week before the due date so they aren't streesed out a lot before they have birth. If you don't use a breeding trap what I do is I look into the tank as often as I can and when I see the guppy very skinny I know she has had her babys and I look for them then fish them out and put them in breeder boxes. Hope this helped, have anymore questions ask them and I will try to respond.

I bought my breeding trap today, and the store (petsmart) didnt have any plants that I could really use. Do that have to be alive plants for the babies to hide in?

Well only some live plants are good for them to hide in, thick bushy plants are better where they can go in and not be seen and sometimes you can get fake floating plants that would work and java moss is good but if you dont have thick bushy plants then they will probably end up hiding in the gravel. Is the breeding trap a net or plastic box?

Plastic floating box. They can hide in gravel crazy.

Dont put them in until you see them going off by themselves and start to make jolting movements. then quick as you can net them put them in and leave her too it for a few hours

She seems to be going off on her own into corners more now. Also I just purshased a 10gal tank about a week ago, and put them in. Will the fry be able to live in rather new water? AND how big are they lol

Re: When do you insert fishies into breeding trap?

So is that a no to NOT put a pregnant molly into the breeding net. My only female molly has been big for awhile but nothing yet. I read somewhere to put the female in the net to get her away from the male so he will stop harassing her. I put her in the net this evening but dont want her to get stressed out and die on us.

I wait until they look like they are going to pop and then put them in the breeder net or box. The guppies I have will start to look like their stomachs are getting squarish from behind, this is getting close to popping and in the net they go. good luck
