I have a marigold variatus who seems to like sunset wagtail platys
any idea whats goin on

Platy and variatus are both in the genus Xiphophorus. They can breed, and if you are breeding either for purity of the strain mixing the two can ruin that.

i knew they were both xiphophorus along with swords, but he doesn't chase the females of his own kind but he chases the sunburst wag platys
it doesnt seem to make sense
i know with platys it doesnt matter what color they are but the other platys seem to stay with their mates
he seems to be confused maybe
