if you can't put a tank divider in to seperate her & the other fish, you could put in any plants that you can, floating or anchored and any hiding spots that you can for the fry to hide in. you may also want to put fish net netting around the intake to keep fry from being sucked in. then wait for the fry and remove all of them that you can to a fry tank.

Hi Sword. I never isolate my pregnant females. I hate to see them all miserable. I'd rather a couple of the fry didn't make it than her abort the whole batch our of stress.

I do as Dave says, I give lots and lots of hiding places (e.g. marbles piled up in a corner of the tank - make sure the structure is robust), lots of plants, a poreous stone with lots of mini galleries, floating plants, you get the drift.

I have a birthing tank, a 5 gal. with LOTS of plants, just floating. Currently I have 3 females in, the newest batch of fry are in it also. A silver sailfin molly had about 50 fry two days ago. She is now moved out and the fry are getting on fine with the females in waiting.....The last time I did this I successfuly raised 47 fry and have just moved them over to a 55 gal tank. This cuts stress levels, and I don't find I loose as many as if I try to seperate them. By having a small tank stuffed full of plants the larger fish don't seem to get into chasing the babies.

Oh you dont have to. This may not work for you and you may have some fry-hungry mollies, but I was just telling you what I do, my preference basically.

I just fish them out and into a grow-out tank when I see them, and I leave the females be.

But it really is totally up to you. Some people swear by the other method (isolating the female before birth).

well i wont have to worry any more she had them this morning
she had 9 quite large ones
they are surprisingly very active she was fat for a couple weeks so that might be why they are so large
